Paolo Israel is an Associate Professor at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. Since 2002, he has been conducting research in northern Mozambique on the relationships between performance, politics, and cultural practices. His work explores themes such as orality, memory, political violence, and stories of liberation, using a microhistorical approach that focuses on forms of social expression. He is the author of In Step with the Times: Mapiko Masquerades of Mozambique.
